woman has been killed after being trapped under a double decker bus in a busy tourist hotspot.

The victim was at the junction of Margaret Street and Regent Street in central London when she was hit by the vehicle at 12.42pm on Monday.

Police officers and London Fire Brigade tried to free her and treat her injuries but she passed away half an hour later at the scene.

Scotland Yard are working to identify the victim and notify her family about the tragic death.

A witness working in a café nearby told The Standard: “We were working and then heard people screaming outside.

“This woman was trapped under the bus – it was horrible. The driver got out and was with people trying to help her.

“I went outside to get people to call the ambulance. Then I came back in, I don’t like to see such things.

“I’ve worked here three months but have never seen anything like it.”

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “Police were called by the London Ambulance Service to reports of a bus in collision with a pedestrian on Margaret Street, W1.

“Officers and the London Fire Brigade attended. Despite the efforts of emergency services, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene at 1.13pm. Her family are yet to be informed.”

The driver has not been arrested and is helping police with their enquiries.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 12:40pm today (March 7) to reports of a road traffic collision involving a pedestrian on Regent Street.

“We sent an ambulance crew, two cycle responders, three medics in fast response cars and an incident response officer to the scene. We also dispatched London’s Air Ambulance.
