The Umbrella Academy is an American superhero streaming television series based on the Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá comic book series of the same name. Steve Blackman and Jeremy Slater made the show for Netflix. It centers on a dysfunctional family of adoptive superheroes who reunite to investigate the mystery of their father’s death and the threat of an impending apocalypse. Borderline Entertainment, Dark Horse Entertainment and Universal Cable Productions are producing the project.
Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, David Castaeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Cameron Britton, Mary J. Blige, John Magaro, Adam Godley, Colm Feore, Justin H. Min, Ritu Arya, Yusuf Gatewood, Marin Ireland , and Kate Walsh are among the cast members. In 2011, Universal Pictures optioned the adaptation as a movie. It was later canceled in favor of a TV series in 2015, but was resurrected by Netflix in July 2017. Toronto and Hamilton, Ontario are the locations for the filming of the series.
The first season premiered on Netflix on February 15, 2019. Netflix stated in April 2019 that 45 million households watched season one in its first month, making it one of the most-streamed series of the year. After the popularity of the first season, the series was renewed for a second season, which premieres on July 31, 2020. Both seasons garnered critical acclaim. The series was renewed for a third season in November 2020, with the third episode slated to premiere on June 22, 2022.
Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy will air in 2022.
By now, fans should be aware that season 3 of The Umbrella Academy will premiere on Netflix on June 22. However, other than a short teaser that coincided with the official release date of the third season, we haven’t seen any video ahead of the show’s Netflix comeback.
However, this may change. Netflix has stepped up its promotion campaign for Season 3, released new artwork, announced new cast members and confirmed that Elliot Page’s Vanya Hargreeves will emerge as transgender in the upcoming episode of the show.
Is there a trailer for the third season of The Umbrella Academy?
Along with the release date announcement, fans got a teaser clip. This follows the February release of promotional images. If the seven photos pointed to the tension between the Sparrows and the Umbrellas, the teaser strongly suggests that a clash is imminent. How could it not, since Sir Reginald Hargreeves raised both kinds of supermen? That’s a doubling of the emotional disturbance.
The Umbrellas and Sparrows oppose each other in the images accompanied by a dramatic musical composition featuring violins (Vanya, weren’t you supposed to get rid of that habit?). Both Number 1s – Luther Hargreeves (the OG) and Marcus Hargreeves (leader of the Sparrows and doppelgänger of Luther) – approach each other with mano-a-mano energy.
The others seem understandably concerned. Ben squeezes his neck as if he’s ready to strike, and if we’re not mistaken, Marcus started the advance? The trailer ends before we can fully confirm.
Regardless of Ben’s newfound connection, we’re sure we’re not alone in the hopes of him returning to the Umbrella fold. Unfortunately, this clip is just a glimpse of what’s to come next season. However, this is undoubtedly just a teaser. There are barely enough fragments here to put together a whole picture. Therefore stay informed; we’ll be rocking the violins once a full trailer is released.
What can we expect from the third season of The Umbrella Academy?
Since we have now avoided the end of the world twice, it is reasonable to assume that there will be a third attempt to avoid Armageddon. While it wouldn’t be a welcome change of pace, The Umbrella Academy season 3 will almost certainly feature another end-of-the-world scenario based on the comics.
If you take the episode titles into account, which we’ll get to later, that seems even more feasible.
An equally powerful collection of people will come face to face with The Umbrella Academy at some point. The Sparrow Academy, an alternative reality group with its own talents, was revealed in the final scene of Season 2.
So no, the Sparrow Academy is not a brand new superhero team created just for The Umbrella Academy. They were first revealed in the closing pages of Hotel Oblivion, The Umbrella Academy’s most recent graphic book volume. It’s still exciting to see them in a live-action setting on television.
After all, we’ve already seen a little glimpse of Season 3 in the release date section above. If you’ve never read the comics, this is a hotel-style prison in space where the galaxy’s most infamous super-villains are held by The Umbrella Academy and other heroic characters. Season 3 will feature some new villains, so be prepared for that.
Elliot Page, Tom Hopper and Emmy Raver-Lampman, three of the show’s actors, have all hinted at “delightful surprises” along the way. The trio obviously haven’t revealed anything major, but it looks like The Sparrow Academy will have a hand in those tantalizing deepening points:
For now, let’s take a look back at the end of Season 2 and speculate about how this might play a part in Season 3.
For the first season, the Hargreeves were back in their own days in 2019, but in season two they traveled back in time to the 1960s. And it won’t get better any time soon.
Season 1’s surrogate father, Sir Reginald Hargreaves, still lives in this version of the universe. Before long, he reveals that the familiar-looking house is “not your home,” and returns to his typically frosty parenting style. The Sparrow Academy headquarters can be found here.
Normally, The Sparrow Academy’s waving cube would be the focus of Luther and the rest of the team’s attention (more on this later). Ben Hargreeves, the deceased brother of the family who (again) lost his life to save Diego, Allison, Klaus and Vanya in Season 2, is revealed to the gang’s surprise as the vice-captain of The Sparrows.
No, this isn’t the doting Ben fans are used to; rather a brash and selfish narrator. Ben’s actor, Justin H. Min, has said he didn’t expect to return for Season 3. Since Ben doesn’t appear to be a member of the Sparrows in the comics, Min and viewers were equally surprised by this change of events:
We might see some new flashbacks to when the members of The Umbrella Academy were younger. Two seasons ago, Ethan Hwang, who played a young Ben Hargreeves, shared an Instagram photo of herself with Min:
It’s possible the two were just chilling, but we think it’s a bit of a coincidence that they met while production for season 3 was still in progress. The return of a young Ben raises two intriguing possibilities.
First, we see memories of Ben’s time at the Umbrella Academy, both individually and collectively. Is it possible to find out how he died? It would provide much-needed clarification on some long-standing mysteries surrounding the fan favorite.
Ben could be a young student at The Sparrow Academy, even if he isn’t now. We could learn more about how Ben grew up in the Sparrows and why he’s so different from the Ben we knew in Seasons 1 and 2.
It’s also been alluded to by Rita Arya, the actress who played Lila in Season 2 and is returning for Season 3. She added in an interview with ComicBook.com, “My goal is for audiences to like more of Lila’s development in the future. I hope it will be entertaining to watch. During filming I had a lot of fun learning about the character and how she interacted with her family. So I sincerely hope that was clear.”
Who will return for season 3 of The Umbrella Academy?
Season 3 will see the return of the series’ seven main cast members:
- Vanya Hargreeves/Number Seven is played by Elliot Page.
- Luther Hargreeves/Number One is played by Tom Hopper.
- Diego Hargreeves/Number Two is played by David Castenada.
- Allison Hargreeves/Number Three is played by Emmy Raver-Lampman.
- Klaus Hargreeves/Number Four is played by Robert Sheehan.
- Aidan Gallagher as Five/Number Five.
- Justin H. Min returns as Ben Hargreeves/Number Six, but this time he will be Number Two at The Sparrow Academy.
Colm Feore (Sir Reginald Hargreeves) is expected to return as the surrogate fathers of both superhero groups. Adam Godley (Pogo the Chimpanzee) and Jordan Claire Robbins (Grace Hargreeves/Mom) could also return as alternate dimension versions of their Umbrella Academy counterparts, but we haven’t heard anything yet.
Ritu Arya will also reprise her role as Lila Pitts. The actress, who initially appeared in Season 2, confirmed her return via her Instagram account on the last day of shooting for Season 3. As a result, we’ll be sure to see more of Diego and Lila’s on-again, off-again-off-again relationship.
