Two people have been killed and one injured in a shooting at a convenience store outside El Rey on Cesar Chavez Drive in Milwaukee. Police said just before 10 a.m. Saturday that a man entered the store, causing a disturbance, and two guards chased him into the parking lot. That when the police said the man had shot at the guards, while one of the guards fired back. One of the guards and the man they were chasing were both shot and killed. The police guard was a 59-year-old man. A 41-year-old bystander was also slightly injured in the crossfire, police said. A witness who was at the store said: “A man came in screaming and a guard took him out. He followed him to the parking lot. About five minutes went by and then I just heard gunshots.” The Villarreal family, who own El Rey, released a statement: “We are devastated by the act of violence that led to a senseless loss of life this morning. This terrible event took place not only in the community we love, but also outside our supermarket,” the statement said. †“Our deepest appreciation goes to the security team, who bravely risked their lives to prevent this tragedy from escalating and potentially turning into an even worse situation. And we thank every first responder for their actions to help stabilize the scene and our neighborhood,” the statement said. “We are proactively working with law enforcement as they conduct a standard investigation. Due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, we are unable to comment further at this time. Just know that the entire El Rey family is heartbroken by this senseless act and grateful for the support of our community,” the statement said. El Rey remained closed Saturday night and reopened on Sunday.
