Tesla delivered the first production versions of its long-delayed electric semi-truck Thursday night five years after CEO Elon Musk unveiled the utility vehicle. The first Tesla Semi trucks were handed over to Pepsi at an event at the company’s Gigafactory in Sparks, Nevada.

Pepsi placed an order for 100 trucks in December 2017, when the Tesla Semi was first unveiled. Other high-profile waiting customers include Anheuser-Busch, Walmart and UPS.

Tesla turned out to have at least five semi-finals at the event, branded PepsiCo and Frito-Lay. Pepsi previously shared plans to use at least 15 of its Tesla Semis to convert its Modesto, California Frito-Lay site in an emission-free installation.

The big reveal comes a few months after Musk tweeted that production of the long-delayed Semi had begun and first deliveries would begin in December 2022.

Musk had originally introduced a prototype Class 8 electric truck in 2017 and planned to begin production in December 2019. The freight transportation program was plagued by delays. During its Q2 2021 earnings report, Tesla said it would have to delay production until 2022 due to supply chain challenges and limited availability of battery cells.

Tesla has not disclosed the price of the semi-truck.

Tesla keeping its 2017 promises

Tesla unveiled its Semi, a Class 8 electric truck, at the company’s factory in Sparks, Nevada.

In 2017, Tesla said Autopilot, the automaker’s advanced driver assistance system, would be on the Tesla Semi. At Thursday’s event, neither Musk nor Dan Priestley, senior manager of Tesla Semi Engineering, mentioned any automated capabilities of the truck, nor discussed the placement of the cameras Autopilot would need to “see.”

However, Tesla stayed true to several of its other promises from 2017. For example, five years ago, Tesla said its Semi would be able to travel 500 miles on a single battery charge when fully charged and traveling at 65 miles per hour. The automaker appears to have delivered on that promise Thursday, even demonstrating with a video showing a semi-ride from Fremont to San Diego. However, the company has not provided any key stats, including battery pack size.

In the past, Musk had said the Semi will go from 0 to 60 mph in 20 seconds when fully loaded, but the director made no mention of that possibility on Thursday. Musk Priestley, however, praised the Semi’s ability to easily pass another truck on a highway while loaded with goods and going up a 6% grade.

The Semi uses the same powertrain as the Plaid Model S and Model X, relying on a “tri-motor system”. Priestley said this means one of the motors is constantly engaged for maximum efficiency and the other two for torque and acceleration, which can be useful if a driver is getting into a loading dock or wants to pass another vehicle.

“It can basically pull 82,000 pounds in cruise, and all it does is a little motor on one shaft,” Musk said, noting that the motor was about the size of a football, but because of its energy density it was more powerful than a diesel engine. In fact, Priestley said the Semi had three times the power of a diesel truck on the road right now.

Musk said the Semi was quick to accelerate and quick to break. As promised, the Semi is built with regenerative braking, meaning the brakes supply power to the battery when drivers take their foot off the accelerator.

“We get to the bottom of the hill and we have cold brakes,” Musk said. “That’s like mind blowing in the truck world.”

Musk also noted that the wheels have better traction — good enough to keep the truck from jack-knifing — than a diesel truck because electric motors are more precise than diesel engines.

The interior cabin of the truck, as previously advertised, is built with the seat in the center. Priestley said drivers would be able to get up and change in the cab, which is built with cargo space for tools and charging ports.
