The Ambani family has been the target of threats for years

Calls received by a hospital run by the Reliance Foundation threatening to kill Mukesh Ambani and his relatives were the latest of the threats received by the billionaire industrialist.

Mumbai Police arrested Rakesh Kumar Mishra (30) from Darbhanga in Bihar on Thursday for allegedly calling Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital in the past two days, threatening to blow up the hospital and kill Ambani, his wife Nita and to kill Akash and Anant’s sons.

The caller had also threatened to blow up Antilia, the famous Ambani family’s residence in South Mumbai on Altamount Road in South Mumbai.

According to the city police, this is the second time the Ambani family has been threatened on the hospital’s landline.

As of August 15 this year, the hospital had received at least nine calls threatening the chairman of Reliance Industries and his family members, an official said.

Bishnu Vidu Bhoumik (56) was arrested in connection with the phone calls.

In November 2021, Mumbai police increased security outside Antilia after being tipped off by a taxi driver about a potential threat, but investigations revealed no such threat.

But an incident threatening the Ambani family earlier that year made national headlines and shook the state government.

On February 25, 2021, an explosives-laden SUV was found parked on South Mumbai’s Carmichael Road, near the Ambani residence.

Police found a printed threatening note inside, along with gelatin sticks. The comment that this was just a “trailer” and next time explosives would be mounted instead of just loose sticks.

Mansukh Hiran, a businessman from Thane, told police that the SUV had been stolen from his possession.

But things took a grim turn when Hiran was found dead in a Thane creek a few days later, and an assistant superintendent of the Mumbai crime department, Sachin Waze was arrested for alleged involvement in parking the SUV near Antilia and also for the murder of Hiran.

The affair also led to the Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh is sent away. An angry Singh then accused the then Home Secretary Anil Deshmukh of asking the police to collect money from bars in Mumbai; Deshmukh subsequently resigned and the CBI registered a corruption case against him.

Mukesh Ambani currently has Z-Plus security coverage provided by the National Government. The Central Industrial Security Force ensures the security of his home.

In 2013, a letter on behalf of the Indian Mujahidin terror group was delivered to Ambani’s Maker Chambers office in the Nariman Point area. It threatened him for supporting the then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modic.

Mukesh Ambani’s younger brother and industrialist Anil Ambani was in the news in 2009 for security reasons when pebbles were discovered in the fuel tank of his helicopter. It was suspected that it was a sabotage attempt.
