Early stage investment firm Antler Australia recently supported 13 startups as part of its ongoing program to build great local tech companies. For six weeks, Startup Daily will share the details of each venture in the “Antler Investor Memos” series.

You can also meet the founders every Monday and Wednesday on the Startup Daily show at ausbiz.com.au.

This series is designed to give you a fast, a keen understanding of the startups and people involved, with many looking for follow-on capital after Antler’s initial pre-seed investment.

Company

As compliance and tax work becomes increasingly automated, accountants face increased demand for advisory services to support their clients and generate additional revenue. brieff is on a mission to advise next-generation accountants with an easy-to-use platform.

While accountants are often viewed as a trusted advisor, especially to small businesses, there is a gap between traditional accounting services and advisory support that focuses on business goals and growth opportunities.

By changing the way accountants work, Brieff empowers them to move from ad hoc consulting to embedded, strategic partners for their clients.

Brieff makes it easy for accountants to move into consulting services and scale this aspect of their offering. Accountants using the platform will receive a “Brieff” in their inbox with a tailored analysis of their clients with talking points, suggested questions and ways to improve their business based on their client’s goals.

Antler investment thesis

“Breff’s CFO in a box infrastructure supports accountants, but also supports high-quality, data-driven consulting services for small business clients. What sets it apart from other market offerings is that the accountant is the customer here and not just a channel,” said Cath Rogers, Partner of Antler Australia.

“Breff’s early market traction is a testament to the intuitive, customer-centric product and the strength of the founding team.”

Traction/milestones, so far

Brieff has worked closely with a group of 12 accountants as part of the Early Adopters Hub program, which has now grown into a strategic partnership.

The beta version of the product will be launched next year.

Use of funds

Antler’s initial investment has enabled Brieff to build a Minimum Viable Product and prepare for implementation. The team has hired a third co-founder and CTO, Rukshan Silva.

The founders say:

“There is a huge opportunity and urgent need to support accountants in their advisory work. What excites us at Brieff is the opportunity to deliver a valuable B2B SasS product to accountants that will have an immediate impact,” said Kate Shanahan, co-founder and CEO of Brieff.

“Antler has enabled us to grow and scale Brieff faster and smarter than we otherwise could. Being part of the Antler community – filled with like-minded founders – was an incredible support network early on in the journey.

“Too often, only the highlights of entrepreneurship are shared. The Antler community has created a space for founders to help each other through the highs and especially the lows. We wouldn’t be where we are today without Antler’s support.”

What’s next?

Antler, an early stage global VC, recently showcased its latest investments in ambitious Australian founders and startups. Brieff was one of Antler Australia’s newest portfolio companies.
