Will The Greatest Demon Lord Season 2 be renewed by the anime production committee? Pic credit: Studio Silver Link

The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn as a Typical Nobody Season 2 anime TV series will have Demon Lord Varvatos Ard Meteor, Ireena, Ginny, and Sylphy taking a field trip to the ancient capital of Kingsglaive when they run into an old, unwelcome acquaintance of the ex-Demon Lord. But when will Shijou Saikyou no Daimaou, Murabito A ni Tensei suru Season 2 come out?

The first season of The Greatest Demon Lord anime was produced in a collaboration between Japanese animation studios Silver Link and Blade. The former is best known for anime series such as Strike The Blood Season 5, BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense, The Dungeon of Black Company, The World’s Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated in Another World as an Aristocrat, and My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!

Studio Silver Link is also producing many anime sequels in the future. Masamune-kun’s Revenge Season 2, BOFURI Season 2, Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World Season 2, The Misfit of Demon King Academy Season 2 anime, and a 2023 My Next Life as a Villainess movie are all confirmed to be in production.

The studio and staff making The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn Season 2 has not been announced yet.

For the first season, the anime project was helmed by director Mirai Minato with Yuushi Ibe (The Dungeon of Black Company) acting as assistant director. Minato has been the lead director on many of the recent successful SILVER LINK anime projects, including BOFURI and Masamune-kun’s Revenge. Minato was also the assistant director on The Misfit of Demon King Academy Season 1.

Writer Michiko Yokote (Grimm, Tribe Nine, The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated!) handled the series composition. Artist Takayuki Noguchi (Higehiro, Queen’s Blade) was the character designer. Composer Takeshi Nakatsuka (My Dress-Up Darling) created the music.

The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn as a Typical Nobody Season 2 OP (opening) and ED (ending) theme song music hasn’t been announced yet.

For the first season, The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn OP “Be My Friend!” was performed by Ayak Ohashi, while the ED “Reincarnation” was performed by ChouCho.

The Greatest Demon Lord is Reborn as a Typical Nobody English dub release date on Crunchyroll was on April 20, 2022. (Read the article in the link for the English dub cast.)

The first season’s finale, The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn as a Typical Nobody Episode 12, was released on June 22, 2022.

This article provides everything that is known about The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn as a Typical Nobody Season 2 (Shijou Saikyou no Daimaou, Murabito A ni Tensei suru Season 2) and all related news. As such, this article will be updated over time with news, rumors, and analysis. Meanwhile, let’s delve down into what is known for certain.

The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn Season 2 release date predictions: Renewal difficult to predict

As of the last update, Kadokawa, SILVER LINK, Blade, or any company related to the production of the anime has not officially confirmed the Banana Fish Season 2 release date. Nor has the production of a sequel been announced.

Once the news is officially confirmed this article will be updated with the relevant information. In the meantime, it’s possible to speculate about when, or if, the Banana Fish Season 2 premiere date will occur in the future.

The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn as a Typical Nobody reviews have been below average. Perhaps the fandom took a sniff, said, “Smells like isekai,” and dismissed it out of hand as trash. It also had the bad luck of being released in the same time frame as quality isekai/fantasy like I’m Quitting Heroing, Trapped in a Dating Sim, and Virgin Road: The Executioner and Her Way of Life.

The biggest issue is that the The Greatest Demon Lord anime came out just in time to be relegated to “me too” status. Even though it’s technically not yet-another-isekai anime, the basic premise and overall tone of the story are similar to The Misfit Of Demon King Academy. This competitor received better reviews and The Misfit Of Demon King Academy Season 2 release date is already coming up.

The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn also bears a striking resemblance to the plot of The Strongest Sage with the Weakest Crest anime. In both stories, the OP protagonist purposefully reincarnates with the intention of finding a new life in the future. The long-term plots in both series also involve Demonic conspiracies.

Of course, the biggest difference is that The Strongest Sage literally wanted to be even more OP, whereas The Greatest Demon Lord Varvatos literally killed himself to escape notoriety only to spectacularly fail by being reborn to famous parents.

Varvatos even naively thought his overwhelming power made it difficult to have true friends since people were leery of his monstrous abilities. In reality, Varvatos was simply socially inept, and the charming comedic beats revolving around his cluelessness and his childhood friendship with Ireena is where The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn anime finds its niche.

Whether it retained that charm after Episode 1 is debatable since the story essentially devolved into light-hearted harem and power fantasy tropes. Regardless, the humor of The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn anime must have been strong enough for it to consistently make it onto the Top 10 on Crunchyroll’s popular anime list during Spring 2022, so if it is trash at least it’s near the top of the heap.

Another factor working in favor of The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn Season 2 being renewed is that Kadokawa has a strong history of greenlighting sequels for similar anime series.

Still, considering that the fandom reaction is a mixed bag it’s hard to predict whether or not this particular series will be renewed.

Even if production on the TV sequel is greenlit, anime production projects are scheduled out years in advance. Most studios in the industry are booked up.

Therefore, even in the best-case scenario, it will be a multi-year wait for The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn Season 2 release date.

The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn as a Typical Nobody manga, light novel series compared to the anime

The story for the anime is based on the Shijou Saikyou no Daimaou, Murabito A ni Tensei suru light novel series by author Myoujin Katou and illustrator Sao Mizuno. As of March 19, 2022, the book series was up to Volume 9 (there are 10 volumes if you count the special side stories volume that was published after Volume 6).

Like many fantasy books, the story began life as The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn as a Typical Nobody web novel that was self-published on Shousetsuka ni Narou (Let’s Become a Novelist) beginning in August 2017. The web novel is still being updated and already has over 100 chapters.

The original creator teamed up with artist Musuho Kotoba to create The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn as a Typical Nobody manga series. Serialized in Square Enix’s Monthly Big Gangan magazine since February 2019, the seinen series is up to Volume 6 as of March 25, 2022.

North American publisher Yen Press is handling the official light novel English translation. The English books will be up to Volume 8 in print as of July 19, 2022. Comikey is releasing the official English manga, but only in online digital format, not printed volumes.

When a light novel series is adapted into the episodic TV format it’s unavailable that dialogue will be condensed and many details skipped. What makes an anime adaptation good is if it manages to capture the main character’s personality and motivations.

In that regard, The Greatest Demon Lord anime succeeded since Ard Meteor is a likable yet awkward protagonist who is hardly a self-insert potato-kun. Even the side characters have actual character development and interesting lines since they’re not simply relegated to boasting about Ard’s awesome powers.

The twist with BOTH the parents being gay was probably unexpected by most. At first, it was easy to dismiss their bizarre behavior as character tropes from the genre, but then in hindsight, you notice the foreshadowing that Ard’s father preferred passionate, studly men, never mind how the mother was ogling the girls at the tournament.

(The manga was a bit more on the nose since the mother was literally drooling. The dialogue bubble had little hearts when she exclaimed, “My god, these girls are great! Young girls are just the best!” Later on, Ard’s mother was panting when she told Ireena, “Can I feel you up a bit?” while the father asked, “So, you know any tough guys ’round here?”)

The anime even spent the time to build up Ireena’s father to ensure that his (apparent) death had some emotional impact. Father figures being killed isn’t unusual in fiction, but it’s a relatively unique twist in the modern isekai/power fantasy genre that the unexpected backstabbing probably caught some watchers off guard.

It was also refreshing to watch the female characters be given the spotlight for character development and not just harem building (they even argue over whether a harem should exist!). It’s largely thanks to the light novels, of course, but Ard and his OP abilities are literally sidelined for a time so that his friends can be featured in a tournament rather than focusing on Ard flaunting his knowledge.

Yes, that did happen with the bully Eraldo Spencer, but in that case, audiences probably wanted Ard to flex his true powers by destroying his opponent both mentally and physically.

(On a side note, the anime toned down the violence from the light novel since the books had Eraldo nearly charred to death and traumatized by the duel despite being healed by Ard. By comparison, in the manga, his clothing was merely blackened. Later on, the anime also censored Ireena and Ginny’s naughty nightgowns by greatly toning down their provocative night visit in Episode 4 which adapted manga Chapter 12. But that’s not surprising since the manga was VERY explicit, especially in manga Chapter 16 when Ireena is threatened by a stereotypical tentacle monster.)

The adaptation pacing of The Greatest Demon Lord anime was also quite reasonable. While it’s not the 1-light-novel-volume perfection of the 86 anime or The World’s Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated in Another World as an Aristocrat anime, the Demon Lord anime did not skim through the books at a rapid rate. By Episode 4, the anime was only up to adapting manga Chapter 15 and Episode 5 finished Volume 1.

By contrast, The Strongest Sage With The Weakest Crest anime literally skipped the introductory chapters in a rush to reach the moment when the main character gained his true potential. Entire story arcs were breezed right past.

Still, it’s not as if The Greatest Demon Lord anime didn’t skip and skim many details in order to reach the anime’s best stopping point for the story. Episode 1 even completely rearranged the story introduction by borrowing backstory elements from future chapters in order to better depict the beginning of Ard and Ireena’s relationship.

That huge change probably left The Greatest Demon Lord manga readers feeling very confused. But it was probably the wisest move since it allowed audiences to form an emotional attachment to the characters before they succumbed to the tropes of the genre.

Episodes 2 and 3 then began to condense the timeline by skipping past the rest of their childhood straight to the academy. This change meant just mentioning the dungeon raids rather than showing them. Nixing traveling to the capital reduced the worldbuilding. There were even skipped humorous flashbacks where Ard thought back to his previous life where Varvatos awkwardly attempted to attend an academy.

Episode 4 provided almost zero build-up to the revelation that Professor Jessica was actually Elzard the Frenzied Dragon Kin, which made it hard to care about the literal backstabbing betrayal. In the light novels, Ard and Ireena first encountered Jessica before arriving at the academy and she also gave class lectures.

The intensity of the battle was toned down since the anime kept the demons inside the tournament stadium and didn’t show the street fights where Ireena was cornered and cowering in fear before the golem. It really seemed like Jessica was an ally at first since she was “injured” fighting the golem. Apparently, Jessica’s plan was to throw the fight and allow the golem to capture Ireena, but when Ireena’s father intervened to save the elven girl Jessica was forced to take drastic measures and drop any pretense.

Also, when Jessica revealed the truth in the books she made it crystal clear that the real lady died a long time ago and that she’s always been “their Jessica”. She also dropped little world-building nuggets like how she’s desired to annihilate the entire planet ever since her rampage thousands of years ago as a white dragon.

And, yes, the manga and light novels both detailed how it’s been 3,000 years ago since Lord Varvatos’ death. It was odd that the anime didn’t mention this pertinent fact in Episode 2 since former general Lady Olivia appears relatively young at first glance despite everyone exclaiming over Ard’s usage of so-called Lost Skills from the time of Demon Lord Varvatos.

Episode 4 also didn’t properly convey the nuance in Ireena and Ginny’s complicated relationship. Yes, it was shown that they were friendly competitors for Ard’s affection and it’s made clear that Ireena is jealous of the succubus.

What’s not made clear is that Ireena secretly hated Ginny for trying to steal Ard away. When Ginny first met Ireena’s father she outright denied that Ginny was even a friend at all!

Ireena denied it at first since she didn’t have enough self-awareness to realize they had begun bonding in friendship. It wasn’t until the moment that Ireena self-sacrificed herself in the face of Jessica’s death threat before she even acknowledged to herself that Ginny was truly a friend.

It was a momentous occasion for Ginny, as well, since she had trouble making friends even after Ard gave her power and scared away the bullies. Ginny had given up and thought she’d always be alone without any friends, so when Ireena openly declared her a friend it was a life-changing event.

Really, it’s the biggest oversight by the anime scriptwriter since the theme of friendship was the entire reason that Varvatos reincarnated. So removing that part of the story left the characters feeling shallow, which is pretty bad considering that the source material didn’t have overly complicated characterization in the first place.

All in all, it’s predicted that the ending of the first season, The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn Episode 12, will find a stopping point corresponding to light novel Volume 3.

It’s the best stopping point since it provides solid plot resolution regarding Ard and his past life with Lydia.

The good news is that there are plenty of light novels available as source material for creating The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn as a Typical Nobody Season 2.

The bad news is that the anime is far ahead of the manga, which hasn’t finished adapting light novel Volume 2. The ending of manga Chapter 20 introduced Sylphy Marheaven, so it will take years before manga readers can read ahead of the anime.

The Greatest Demon Lord Season 2 anime TV spoilers (plot summary/synopsis)

The last time audiences watched the anime, a trip to the ancient world had undone the curse of Lydia the Champion, releasing Ard from a lifetime of agony. Now he can finally focus on the true adventure before them as they take their field trip to the ancient capital of Kingsglaive!

However, it’s becoming clear that Ard can’t stay out of trouble for long. A run-in at Kingsglaive’s research institute with another chaotic ex-member of the Four Heavenly Kings, Verda Al-Hazard, seems to prove Ard’s propensity for mishaps. It certainly doesn’t help that Ireena and Ginny have started fighting for his attention.

Their school trip has only just begun! Just when Ard thinks he’s managed to shake off one Heavenly King, another seems to take its place. This time it’s the elderly general Lizer, who now styles himself a pope. What else could possibly go wrong?

Perhaps… a religion that worships the Demon Lord?! Or, when the Kingdom of Laville’s Queen Rosa seriously honors her early threat to collect his seed?

Ard will be forced to confront his deep-seated resentment toward the world that drove him to the point of reincarnating himself.

Unfortunately, anime fans will have to wait until The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn as a Typical Nobody to watch what happens next. Stay tuned!
