In June, the congressional committee charged with investigating the Capitol riots will hold a series of public hearings to highlight the committee’s findings. The first hearing, held on the evening of June 9, focused on police officers and participants present at the Capitol. Subsequent hearings are expected to bring forward more evidence of former President Donald Trump’s role in instigating and spreading the violence.

Initially staged as a protest and rally for President Trump, the “Save America” rally on January 6, 2021 escalated into a full-scale attack on the Capitol over the course of hours. More than 130 US Capitol police officers were injured in the ensuing chaos, and four officers who responded died by suicide in the following months† Speech platforms such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter responded with strict moderation measures, including a network-wide ban on President Trump’s accounts.

The House committee has been set up to investigate coordination of the attack, and today’s hearings are likely to be an important step toward that goal. In conversation on Wednesday reported by NBC NewsA committee member said the hearing would reveal new information showing the riots were a direct result of former President Trump’s efforts to stay in office after losing the election.

“We will reveal new details showing that the January 6 violence was the result of a coordinated, multi-step effort to reverse the results of the 2020 election and stop the transfer of power from Donald Trump to Joe Biden,” the statement said. assistant. reporters, “and indeed that former President Donald Trump was central to that effort.”

Where can I watch the January 6 hearing?

The hearings will be: streamed live from the committee’s website and from his YouTube channel† We’ve also embedded the stream below so you can watch it right from this page.

The first hearing can be viewed in its entirety here

Officially titled “House Selected Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol,” the proceedings will be broadcast live by major cable news networks, including CNN and MSNBC. Notably, the Fox News Channel failed to deliver the first hearing, which some analysts have seen as part of a wider effort to downplay stories related to January 6.

What time do the January 6 hearings start?

A total of seven public hearings are scheduled for the commission, all of which are expected within the month of June† The schedule is as follows:

  • The first hearing took place on Thursday, June 9, at 8 p.m. ET.
  • The second hearing begins Monday, June 13 at 10:30 a.m. ET.
  • The third hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, June 15 at 10 a.m.
  • The fifth hearing is scheduled for June 21, although no time has been set.
  • No date has been set for the fourth, sixth and seventh hearings.

Who will testify before the committee?

The first hearing included testimony from U.S. Capitol police officer Caroline Edwards and a documentary filmmaker named Nick Quested who was present during the Capitol riots. Edwards suffered significant injuries as part of the force defending the Capitol, sustaining a concussion and skull injury as the mob forced its way through a barricade. Quested was embedded with the Proud Boys during the attack, but it’s unclear what the focus of his testimony will be.

The second hearing is expected to include video testimony from former Trump campaign adviser Matt Morgan and former Fox News political editor Chris Stirewalt.
