So many people have done well and gained international fame in the entertainment field, especially in the US. But only a handful of notable figures are remembered and celebrated even after their passing, and Sy Kravitz is one such celebrity.
Born on December 10 in the year 1924, Sy Kravitz’s real name is Seymour Kravitz. He spent his childhood in the Brooklyn borough of New York City. He was raised by two very compassionate and devoted parents who took care of all his needs.
Unfortunately, not much is known about them. Sy was a naturalized American citizen of Russian and Jewish ancestry. He completed his education at Beverly Hills High School. After graduating, he built up an illustrious career as a filmmaker. Thanks to his dedication and perseverance, he quickly became known as one of the top producers in the US.
2. Bond with his brother
His childhood was extremely happy and worth cherishing all his life and the main reason for this was his loving younger brother, Leonard Harold Kravitz. Sy once said in an interview that as children they were both very close and would always be together.
Growing up, they both served in the Korean War, where tragedy struck the Kravitz family when Leonard lost his life during the war, leaving a gaping hole in Sy’s life. After his death, Leonard was honored with a Distinguished Service Cross by the government of the United States of America.
3. Relationship with his family
Sy Kravitz married a prominent African American actress, Roxie Rocker, in 1962. She is best known for portraying Helen Wills on the show, The Jeffersons. Lenny Kravitz, the iconic musician, was born of this marriage. He is named after his late uncle. Sy and Rocker’s marriage was far from a fairy tale.
Though blissful at first, it soon turned into a nightmare when Sy was caught cheating on his wife, not once but multiple times. After learning about this infidelity on the part of his husband, she couldn’t take it any longer and in 1985 decided to end the marriage by divorce.

4. His death
Sy Kravitz died of leukemia on October 29, 2005, at age 80. He was then admitted to a hospital in New York City. After his death, Lenny Kravitz paid tribute to his father at one of his Connecticut shows, with the famous song Let Love Rule.
Years later, dying of cancer, Sy Kravitz had a deathbed conversion. From the story:
“It sounds like…” [Lenny] Kravitz starts and then says, “It will sound like it sounds, but this is what it was. I mean, spiritually, hospitals are very intense places. It is like the threshold of death. And he was laying in his bed one night and he looked at me, and he wasn’t on drugs, and he said to me, “Those things are flying around my bed and things are crawling on the floor.” I said, “What are you talking about?” This is from my father. He does nothing with spiritual matters. No heebie-jeebie stuff. And he’s, “There are things with black wings and they fly around my bed… the things that crawl on the floor, they look like rats and they’re not… I see them.” I didn’t quite know how to take it. And then he got this revelation and he accepted Christ – this is a non-religious Jewish man – and somehow the spirit world opened up to him. Almost as if he’d been spiritually bound all his life and now this thing was released.”
After this spiritual experience, his father began to answer some of the questions Kravitz would never get answers to. When Kravitz asked him earlier, ‘Why did you do what you did? Why did you do this to Mom?”, his father would stop. “That’s the way it is,” he would say. But a few nights after the experience, sitting in the hospital with Lenny and his two half-sisters, Sy started talking. “He apologized to us in the most sincere, sincere way. “I’m sorry for what I’ve done, how I’ve been, how I treated you and I love you.” Real. And it was shocking… And what he said to me is that he always wanted to change his life, and he felt that there was something on his back and he couldn’t get it off. All his life he knew inside that he wanted to change. But, he said, ‘I couldn’t do it.’?’
There would be another unexpected moment: “As he got closer to his death, another night in the hospital, he was very tired and he looked at me and said, ‘There are angels all over the room. Because of Jesus.” And that was it. He turned and looked away. If you knew my father, that was the furthest away from him.’
These were the last words Sy Kravitz would say of this sort. But for the son, something real happened in those hospital days that changed everything. “The last three weeks of his life were the best relationship I had with him. And it wiped out the 40 years before that.”
