Paying tribute to British diplomats who had remained elsewhere in the region during the period, the Prime Minister said the embassy would reopen next week.
Speaking in New Delhi on the second day of his two day trip to India, Mr Johnson said: “The extraordinary fortitude and the success of President Zelensky and the Ukrainian people in resisting Russian forces in Kyiv means I can announce today that we will very shortly, next week, reopen our embassy in Ukraine’s capital city.”
The move comes after other the EU and Italy said it would also reopen their diplomatic missions in Kyiv following Vladimir Putin’s decision to abandon plans to try and seize the Ukrainian capital and switch its focus to taking territory in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine.
Mr Johnson added: “The UK and our allies will not watch passively as Putin carries on this onslaught.”
