Macron: This war will last

French President Emmanuel Macron said he is convinced that “this war will last” and warned that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine will have tough consequences for Europeans.

He told farmers at France’s Agricultural Fair in Paris on Saturday that sectors from wine and cereals to exports and energy prices will be affected by the invasion.

“War has returned to Europe. This war was unilaterally chosen by Putin,” he said. “This war will last and all the crises that go with it will have durable consequences.

“We must prepare ourselves with lots of determination and also lots of solidarity.”

He said a “plan of resilience” was being put in place, but did not elaborate.

Dozens wounded overnight in Kyiv

Dozens of people were wounded in overnight fighting in Kyiv, city mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Saturday morning.

As of 6 a.m. local time, 35 people, including two children, had been wounded, he said. It is unclear whether he was referring only to civilians.

Klitschko added there was currently no major Russian military presence in Kyiv, although he said saboteur groups were active.

Armed Forces Minister: Ukraine is putting up incredible resistance

Armed Forces Minister James Heappey has said that Ukrainian forces defending Kyiv have been putting up “incredible resistance”.

Mr Heappey said the situation was “very grave” but that the fighting in the capital was so far confined to “very isolated pockets of Russian special forces and paratroopers”.

“The main armoured columns approaching Kyiv are still some way off. That is a testament to the incredible resistance the Ukrainian armoured forces have put up over the last 48 hours or so,” he told Sky News.

“Clearly the Russian plan is to take Kyiv but the reality is that the Ukrainians are thwarting them thus far.

“I think that will be a great cause of concern for President Putin and rather points to the fact that there was a lot of hubris in the Russian plan and that he may be awfully advised.”
