ussia’s offensive has “lost momentum” while up to a third of its ground force has now been lost since the invasion of Ukraine began, the UK has said.

In its latest update, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said the offensive in the Donbas has now slowed and is behind schedule.

While a large majority of its ground force has now been lost, the MoD added that there have been significant losses to surveillance and intelligence equipment, which has helpeed to hinder progress in Ukraine.

“Russia’s Donbas offensive has lost momentum and fallen significantly behind schedule,” its latest update said.

“Russia has now likely suffered losses of one third of its ground combat force it committed in February.”

After initial progress stalled during the invasion of Ukraine, Russia has since refocused troops in the eastern region of the country, in areas such as Mariupol and Donetsk.

The MoD concluded: “Russian forces are increasingly constrained by degraded enabling capabilities, continued low morale and reduced combat effectiveness.

“Many of these capabilities cannot be quickly replaced or reconstituted, and are likely to continue to hinder Russian operations in Ukraine.

“Under the current conditions, Russia is unlikely to dramtically accelerate its rate of advance over the next 30 days.”

In his nightly address to the nation, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky praised those defending the Donbas.

He also said Russian forces were withdrawing from the city of Kharkiv – the second-largest in Ukraine.

Mr Zelensky added that troops had now begun to reclaim areas and have moved back into six towns over the past day.
