‘United Health Interface will do with services what UPI did with payments’

• UHI is a network enabling interoperability in health services.

• e-RUPI is a new fintech initiative for direct payment to healthcare providers in the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana.

Like UPI revolutionized the payment system IndiaUnified Health Interface or UHI will revolutionize digital healthcare delivery, said Dr RS SharmaDIRECTOR, National Health Authority, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare at IFTA 2022 in Mumbai.

A fundamental layer of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) stack,
UHI is a network of open protocols that enables interoperability in health services. Through UHI-enabled applications, patients can discover, book, fulfill and pay for services offered by various participating providers through an app of their choice.

“UHI makes it easier for healthcare providers to do business by giving them access to a large number of users through a common platform. This paradigm shift in healthcare delivery is also creating a sea of ​​opportunity for the emerging HealthTech ecosystem,” said Dr. Sharma.

Some of the services that will be included in UHI include teleconsultation, lab booking, and ambulance services.

The healthcare system is also working to enable payments via e-RUPI, as part of a fintech initiative for direct payment to healthcare providers – under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, a government-funded health insurance company.

e-RUPI is a person- and target-specific digital instrument based on the architecture of UPI. It is a one-time, cashless, contactless prepaid digital voucher that can be used via SMS or QR code. It can be redeemed without a card, digital payment app or internet banking access.

“e-RUPI will have countless uses: for starters, health, nutrition, education and agriculture are just some of the areas that will benefit. A number of states have already started using e-RUPI for various benefit delivery programs in their states,” Dr. Sharma added.

It was launched by National Payment Company of India (NPCI) in August
2021.

Dr. Sharma believes it is time we innovate new products in the fintech industry that can be combined with health tech for an affordable, scalable and accessible digital healthcare ecosystem.

IFTA 2022 is a fintech event organized by India FinTech Forum, an interest group. More than 2,750 fintech companies and more than 30,000 individuals are members of this forum.
