Early life, education and college basketball

At a young age, Antoine showed a lot of dedication to basketball, he constantly trained and improved his skills, and dreamed of being part of the NBA. He attended Mount Carmel High School, where he played alongside Donovan McNabb, who would later become a professional American Football player – it was/is not uncommon for athletes to play multiple sports in high school. Thanks to his statistics and achievements, he was offered a full athletic scholarship to the University of Kentucky and to play for them, participating in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I.

He played under Coach Rick Pitino during his time there, and he became a starter during his freshman year and was named as the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Most Valuable Player (MVP). He was named to multiple teams and received multiple awards during his two years at the school. He was also part of the 1996 Basketball Championship-winning team. After his sophomore year, with good prospects, he dropped his scholarship to pursue a career in the NBA.

Early NBA Career

Walker declared himself for the 1996 NBA draft and was selected as the sixth overall pick by the Boston Celtics.

He performed well throughout his rookie season despite the team underperforming, the lowest they have finished in all of history. Then Pitino became the Celtics coach and put him to good use, leading him to all-star status and reaching highs in many stats. He was joined by future star Paul Pierce in 1998, forming a talented duo that helped the team reach the playoffs in 2001. They reached the Eastern Conference finals, but eventually lost to the New Jersey Nets.

The Celtics failed to make the playoffs the following season and he was subsequently traded with Tony Delk to the Dallas Mavericks. Since the Mavericks had many high quality players, he was barely used while with them and was eventually traded to the Atlanta Hawks.

After spending some time with the Hawks without much notice, he was traded back to the Celtics where he played the remainder of the 2005 season, along with Gary Payton and Al Jefferson.

Championship with Miami and Retirement

After that season, Antoine was then traded in a major five-team deal, the largest in NBA history, which prompted him to move to the Miami Heat and reunite him with Gary Payton. During his time with the Heat, he mainly played from the bench in forward positions. He quickly adapted to the role, becoming the sixth man on the team, leading them in three-point shots and shooting percentages. He continued to improve through the playoffs and helped with crucial threes during crucial games in the playoffs.

Antoine Walker

The team eventually made it to the NBA Finals after beating the New Jersey Nets, and in the final series they played against the Dallas Mavericks, consistently posting good numbers to take the Heat to the top. championship in six games, alongside players like Dwayne Wade and Shaquille O’Neal. n the following year, he was nowhere near the level of the previous season, with most of his stats plummeting. The Heat lost to the Chicago Bulls in the first round of the playoffs before being traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves and after a year to the Memphis Grizzlies before being waived. After his release, he played briefly in Puerto Rico and the NBA Development League, hoping to get another shot at the NBA, but eventually retired.

Raids

In 2000, Walker was spending some time with former teammate and close friend Nazr Mohammed when the duo were robbed after leaving a Chicago restaurant. This wouldn’t be the last robbery in his life, as seven years later, two criminals discovered the location of his home and… robbed him at gunpoint, steal his Mercedes and about $200,000 worth of merchandise. After the police were called, they found his car, although many of its expensive modifications had been stripped. Four men were eventually arrested, with two of the criminals having previously robbed celebrities, including former NBA player Eddy Curry.

Recent projects and personal life

Antoine was engaged to reality TV personality Evelyn Lozada from 1998 to 2008, but they called it quits. She is best known for being one of the main cast members of “Basketball Wives”. During the latter part of Walker’s career, he suffered from numerous vices, including alcohol and gambling, effectively losing most of the wealth he had acquired during his career. In 2010 he asked for bankruptcy in Florida, after reporting debts up to $12.7 million. Most of his real estate and luxury assets had to be sold to cover the debt and bankruptcy attorney.

Before the filing, he had been arrested several times for attempting to write false checks while spending time at casinos in Las Vegas. He had become addicted to gambling and soon lost as much money as he made from bad decisions. These habits also led to his noticeably reduced performance in basketball, as he had also gained weight. Many attribute the problems arising from his breakup with Evelyn Lozada.

With the help of Nazr Mohammed he was able to pay off his debt, and after three years he declared that he was debt free. In recent years, he worked as a basketball analyst and became part of the teams for the SEC Network and 120 Sports.
