He was later transferred to a supermax prison in Colorado, after his attempt to kill an inmate named Walter Johnson, though the story is somewhat hazy, with denials among Gotti’s family and associates. Other stories state that he became friends with other gangs, including African American and Hispanic groups. In 1998, doctors diagnosed him with throat cancer and he underwent surgery to remove the tumor. Although the surgery was successful, the tumor returned after two years and he died of the disease in 2002. He was buried next to his son who died in a motorcycle accident many years ago.
