She enjoyed spending time with her grandparents named Robert Cummings and Ruth Elma, while also being close to her Uncle James. Her father remarried after her mother Joyce’s divorce, and Maya Rockeymoore became her stepmother. Jennifer attended a local Baltimore high school, where she was especially interested in exercising and spending time with her friends. After graduating, she enrolled at the University of Maryland and received her undergraduate degree in 2007. She continued her education at Howard University, graduating with a master’s degree in 2009.

He attended Baltimore City College, graduating in 1969, and then enrolled at Howard University in Washington, DC, where he was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society.

He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science in 1973 and continued his education at the University of Maryland’s School of Law, graduating with a doctorate in law in 1976 — practicing law for 19 years before being elected to the House of delegates. He chaired the Maryland Legislative Black Caucus, served on the board of directors for SEED Schools and on the advisory board of the University of Maryland’s Law School.
Elijah lived in the Madison Park community in Baltimore, where he was a member of the New Psalmist Baptist Church. His first wife was Joyce Matthews, who gave birth to Jennifer, while Elijah already had a son and a daughter from his previous relationships.
After divorcing Joyce, he married Maya Rockeymoore in 2009. Elijah’s cousin called Christopher Cummings was murdered at the college he attended called Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia in June 2011.
Elijah had health problems in 2017 and had to undergo surgery to repair his aortic valve, before contracting an infection in June 2017. He died on October 17, 2019, of what his spokeswoman said was “complications related to long-term health problems.” His funeral took place on October 25, 2019 at the New Psalmist Baptist Church in Baltimore, attended by his closest friends and family – some of those in attendance included Barack Obama and Bill Clinton.
