WhatsApp has a major malfunction in the communication app. The service started experiencing issues around 3AM ET, with users being greeted with a “connecting” message. When you try to use WhatsApp web, you see the error message ‘Make sure your computer has an active internet connection’.
Down detector has more than 60,000 reports of issues with the service, but WhatsApp parent company Meta has yet to comment on the issues. The outage appears to affect users worldwide.
This is the first major WhatsApp outage since the service went down as part of a massive outage that also saw Instagram, Messenger, Oculus and Facebook shut down last year. That outage lasted almost six hours before it was fixed and WhatsApp was back online. Meta, known at the time as Facebook, said the major outage was due to a configuration change in its routers. Instagram, Messenger and Facebook are all working fine at the moment – only WhatsApp is not available.
WhatsApp outages are still relatively rare, but they have a major impact on global communications as the service is used by more than two billion people every month. When WhatsApp went down last year, so did the jobs of Brazilian workers.
