Early life and education

Joyce was raised as a single child in New York City by her Jewish parents – her father owned a small jewelry store, while her mother was a nurse at a local hospital.

Joyce grew up with an interest in acting and modeling, and while attending a local high school, she was a member of the drama club and appeared in almost all the plays before enrolling in 1975. She also worked on her singing skills and tried to learn to play the piano, but after discovering that she had no talent, she concentrated on listening to music rather than creating it.

Roles in movies

Joyce held several jobs to support herself financially, before making her film debut with Brenda Weintraub in the teen comedy film “The Hollywood Knights” in 1980, followed by her roles in “They All Laughed” in 1981 and “Valley Girl” in 1983.

She played Linda in the dance musical “Staying Alive”, starring John Travolta and Cynthia Rhodes and directed by Sylvester Stallone. The year 1984 saw her star as Belinda in the mockumentary film “This is Spinal Tap”, and she then appeared in “Just one of the guysas Terry Griffith, the role changed her life. In the film, Joyce starred as Terry who, after losing two jobs to two boys, decided to pretend to be a man in her high school by dressing up and cutting her hair short.
