Early life and education

Zach Ward was born on August 31, 1970 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. His mother is Canadian actress Pam Hyatt, who is known for the voice of Kaede in the English dubbed version of the animated series “InuYasha”, as well as for playing Noble Heart Horse in “The Care Bears Movie II: A New Generation” of 1986.

Ward also has an older brother named Carson T. Foster, whose father is John Foster – Ward’s father’s name has never been confirmed to the public, but his mother was married to John Foster from 1957 until his death in 2012.

Even as a child Ward expressed his penchant for acting, but his mother was against this, because she wanted her sons to live ‘normal’ lives away from the limelight. However, after Carson intervened, she changed her mind and let Ward act.

“A Christmas Story”

Ward starred in a few commercials in the early ’80s, before finally breaking through in 1983 when he was cast to be a part of the family film “A Christmas Story.”

He showed up at the audition for the sidekick Grover, among 300 other kids – in the end the choice was between him and another redhead boy, but in the end Ward won the part. However, when he arrived on set in Cleveland, the director told him he would be playing local bully Scut Farcus instead.

The film was based on a Jean Shepherd novel, “In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash”, and received positive reviews from even the strictest film critics. Although Peter Billingsley played the main character Ralphie, it was Ward’s portrayal of Scut that received the most attention and skyrocketed his career.
