Nelson earned the role of Dwayne in the first African-American adolescent comedy, What’s Happening!!, when he was 16 years old. It aired on ABC from August 5, 1976 to April 28, 1979. From 1985 to 1988, a sequel series called What’s Happening Now!! ran in first-run syndication, with most of the main cast members reprising their roles.
