Herbie Hancock was born in Chicago, Illinois, in the United States. He is named after Herb Jeffries, a singer and actor. He graduated from Hyde Park High School. Herbie had never learned jazz or had a teacher, but he developed by listening to the kind of music and as a child prodigy he had a sense of harmony. He learned by listening to the Hi-records vocal group. Chris Anderson van Lo was regarded by him as the harmonic guru. He received the honorary degree of Doctor of Fine Arts.
