She is of Japanese and American descent. Her ancestors moved to the US. Her father, Carole Yamaguchi, worked as a medical secretary and her mother, Jim Yamaguchi, was a dentist. She grew up in Fremont, California with her other two siblings. As a small child she had always wanted to be a figure skater.
