Linda Lavin was born in Portland, Maine, on October 15, 1937, to David Joseph Lavin and Lucille (née Potter). Her father was an entrepreneur and her mother was a professional opera singer. Her grandparents were Russian Jews who immigrated to the United States.
Lavin started performing on stage when he was five years old. She attended Waynflete School and later the College of William and Mary. Lavin performed in several Broadway shows while in college.
