For many of us entrepreneurs, our main focus is our business. But it shouldn’t be. Our overall health should be a higher priority. We work long days every day, leaving little time for recreational activities. There is a greater chance of a longer and more balanced life if we make our health and self-care part of our normal lives.

dr. Michael Freeman, a psychiatrist and researcher at UC San Francisco, conducted a study in 2015 that illustrates how different founders are from the rest of the population. It’s understandable to want to keep going until we’ve achieved what we consider success, or whatever our goals are. But that’s a surefire way to either fail, give up, or experience burnout. Consider these facts and tips on your entrepreneurial journey so you can be your healthiest and happiest.

We like to think that our eBooks, courses, products, services, etc. are our greatest asset, but the fact is that we are our own greatest asset. Think about it, if we’re always so busy “running business” that we neglect our health and happiness, causing mental problems, fatigue and burnout – how valuable would we be to our business?

2. Being healthy affects motivation

If you don’t have time to go to the gym, you can do something as simple as walking. I put in my earplugs, turn on some of my favorite songs and I walk. That sweat is starting to flow, and I tell you, those feel-good endorphins help clear my head and bring me to a higher level of calm and clarity. It raises my mood. If you haven’t already, add some sort of physical activity to your life and try to do it at least three times a week. Eating healthy also helps. I’m not saying you have to be a health junkie, but replacing soda with water and eating more of the right foods helps too. Also make sure you get enough sleep. When you are healthy and happy, you are more focused, energetic and productive.

3. Use your circle

Stay away from people who put you down. Have conversations and interactions with people who contribute to your happiness and peace, such as family or friends. If you can’t have that face-to-face interaction for whatever reason, a Zoom meeting can be helpful. Having close relationships with other entrepreneurs is also ideal. 5. Relax, refresh, recharge

It’s important to relax, refresh and recharge because if we don’t, it causes stress. And stress can dampen positive traits, which can impact our interpersonal relationships and our coping mechanisms. Do something that relaxes, refreshes, or recharges you. Some things that help me are reading, writing and a warm bath. Pause, even if only for 10 minutes. Step away from emails, cell phones, TV and social media. If you can, take a 30 minute nap. Go on staycation. In general, make your health and happiness a priority.
