Annika is a British television crime drama series, adapted from the BBC Radio 4 drama Annika Strandhed. The first episode, produced by Black Camel Pictures for Alibi and All3Media, premiered on August 17, 2021.

Annika Strandhed is a Scottish Police Inspector recently assigned to the Glasgow Marine Homicide Unit. She is accompanied by her teenage daughter. The bond between Annika and her daughter forms the basis for the entire episode’s subplot.

Annika, like the original radio series, has a Norwegian background.

Nick Walker also wrote the radio series Annika Strandhed, starring Nicola Walker as Annika Strandhed but set in Oslo.

If a show with record-breaking ratings isn’t enough to entice viewers, maybe Annika’s lead actor will. Fans were heartbroken when Nicola Walker left Unforgotten, and they salivate at the prospect of seeing the actor back in the saddle and investigating crimes.

This time, she’s jumped aboard (pun intended) to take part in a new marine-themed crime thriller. The program is a spin-off of a BBC Radio 4 series set in Norway. Annika Stranded by Nick Walker. The series has been adapted for the cinema set in Scotland, and moves about Scandi Noir, it looks like Scottish Noir is taking off.

“I fell in love with Annika right away,” Nicola told Sweet Talk Productions, the show’s producers. “She just jumped off the page to me!” It was immediately clear that Nick had invented this woman, who was brilliantly complex, amusing and completely different. And she’s “difficult” in an endearing way. I love ladies who are defiant.”

“Annika is without a doubt my ideal alter ego!” she said. Her professional and personal lives are inextricably linked and she is never less than authentic. She is much braver than I am and much less concerned about other people’s opinions, which is what I like about her. And I like her approach to the more challenging aspects of her profession and life.”

Everything you need to know about your new favorite show can be found here.

About Annika:

Based on Nick Walker’s hit Radio 4 piece Annika Stranded, Annika explores the story of Inspector Annika Standhed. She’s thrown in at the deep end as the newly appointed chief of the Marine Homicide Unit. Despite her new location, Nicola retains her Norwegian identity. Another unique aspect of the show is the amount of time Annika spends chatting directly to the camera, making us viewers her secret sidekicks!

“Annika has a direct path to you through the barrel of the lens,” Nicola explained in an interview with Virgin Media. “I imagined I was talking to someone sitting at home on their couch as if they were my silent partner-in-crime, and I pass information on to them and withhold information from them,” she stated.

The heartfelt DI is tasked with rallying her brand new team before embarking on their first case. After a male victim is found dead with a harpoon in his skull, the team must track down a horrific crime.

Nicola said that Annika is not your typical researcher and that her unique selling point is a bit more scientific in nature. “She has her own specific method of taking stories from Chaucer, Ibsen or Shakespeare. [In episode 1, she makes an allusion to Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick.] She has a track record of getting results through this research method,” the actor continued.

Annika Season 2 Release Date:

In terms of release, production of the second season has not yet started due to the lack of green light. This could cause a delay in shooting, making it unlikely that any new episodes will appear in the UK this summer. If the first shoot is completed in October, the new episodes may premiere on Alibi in late spring or early summer 2023, followed by Giallo in Italy in the fall.

Are Nicola and Walker connected?

New! It is purely coincidental that they share the same first names and a surname.

Yet they have been working together for years. In addition to the radio series Annika Stranded, they also collaborated in 2010 on the BBC Radio 4 drama Lifecoach.

The cast of Annika season 2

If a second season is green-lighted, Nicola Walker will reprise her role as the titular investigator, DI Annika Strandhed, in Scotland, where Annika is being filmed.

The rest of her Marine Homicide Unit, including Jamie Sives (Guilt), Katie Leung (The Nest), Ukweli Roach (Blindspot), and Kate Dickie, are also expected to return (The Cry).

Morgan, played by Silvie Furneaux, and Dr. Jake Strathearn, Annika’s psychiatrist and love interest, should both return (Paul McGann).

What happens in the second season of Annika?

We don’t have any story details for Annika season two yet, but it’s expected to follow the same pattern as season one’s crime-of-the-week style.

In addition, we expect to continue our investigation into Annika’s personal ties. Annika had a loving involvement with her daughter Morgan’s psychiatrist throughout the first season, and a future second season would no doubt continue on that storyline.

Of course, we expect the second season to feature several connections to great literature as Annika solves her weekly case.
