Leigh Wood battles Michael Conlan tonight in an eagerly-anticipated featherweight world title showdown on home soil in Nottingham.
Eight months on from his stunning 12th-round upset of China’s Xu Can at Matchroom Fight Camp, home favourite Wood defends his ‘regular’ version of the WBA’s 126lbs belt for the first time at Motorpoint Arena.
It’s an extremely tough opening defence for the 33-year-old, with the highly-rated Conlan eager to take the next step by picking up his maiden world title.
The ultra-confident Belfast fighter, an Olympic bronze medallist who is unbeaten at 16-0 in the professional ranks, claimed the interim belt with a dominant win over TJ Doheny at Falls Park last August.
A unification showdown with the winner of IBF champion Kiko Martinez’s battle with Josh Warrington likely awaits the victor, while Leo Santa Cruz still holds the WBA’s ‘super’ title despite having not fought at featherweight since early 2019.
There is also plenty of interest on tonight’s undercard, including Terri Harper’s lightweight debut in a WBA Intercontinental title clash and Caoimhin Agyarko bidding for the WBA International middleweight strap.
